Conversations while eating a giant chocolate Santa...
Me: do you want some Santa torso with your wine?
Wife: uh huh.
Me: should we feel a sense of accomplishment or sadness when we get to his belt buckle?
Wife: yep.

On working in the restaurant industry: (aka...
I was talking with a friend last night who is planning a move back to Portland in a few months.  She currently has her own house cleaning business in San Francisco, but is looking for a change when she moves here. She mentioned that she wanted to work with food and wants to get into the industry somehow. Having worked in this industry for 16 years, I obviously have advice to give on the...

The end is near...
I will have had a total of 11 days off from November 1st through January 2nd. And yes Christmas and Thanksgiving count as days off. None of these days have been consecutive days off. I wasn’t sure if I would survive another year of this bullshit. But there’s a light a the end of the tunnel and I can’t WAIT. I’m taking a 4 day weekend January 13th. FOUR DAYS! FOUR DAYS! ...

Why I love Portland #4,576
We walk into a bar at 11pm and my brother in law says, “Is this a bar? Why is everyone sitting down?” We then explain to him that Portland isn’t a city that revolves around getting laid…he’s from Chicago so this is completely foreign to him.

Best. Christmas. Ever. (…and yes the show is absolutely 100% accurate regarding all things Portland)

Not. Gonna. Make. It.
My holiday non-stop-workathon of hell has come to a miserable climax of complete exhaustion. I don’t care about shit. I’m completely over it. I’m running on fumes. I just want to be home baking cookies and drinking booze and cooking for friends and family like a normal person. Somebody save me from my exhaustion.

*disclaimer* this post is sappy
Natalie is once again snoring in bed next to me. Her legs pretzeled around mine. Her face smashed sweetly against my arm… Merry Christmas to me.

I was recently asked how I handle the holidays...
To which I had a wide array of responses and advice on how I have begun to overcome some of the pain of being disowned. I added a line of what I said in response to my sister in law who (years ago) invited me (and was very clear that the invite was for JUST ME) to Thanksgiving dinner. At the time she was living 2 hours away from my wife and I. She clearly thought she was doing a good deed in...

Today is one of those days. You guys.  I am sooooooo geeked up on chai tea and shots of espresso right now! I think I want to feel like this all the time. My staff is going to have to do an intervention (circa Saved by the Bell when Jessie Spano got hooked on caffeine pills). But I don’t care!! I feel gooooooooooood.

I'm watching The Family Man and drinking a mimosa...
Why did I choose The Family Man, you ask? Because THIS: Tea Leoni is just too cute, and hot, and all around perfect in this movie. The shower scene while she sings Beast of Burden is what I aspire to in each and every shower I take.

I know she loves me because of conversations like...
Me: I'm unhappy with how my ponytail looks. I like Julie's...hers always looks so perfect. I have ponytail envy.
Nat: I don't think hers is that great.
Me: Oh shut up, you've never looked at her ponytail!
Nat: Yes I have! In fact I just noticed the other night that it looks like it's trying WAY too hard. It's FAR too much like an ACTUAL horses tail. I like yours much better.
Me: You're a liar. But that's very sweet of you to say.

Holiday exhaustion update (this is not an...
I’m not going to make it. This industry is officially going to kill me.  The bullshit hospitality standards of the complete and total loss of any resemblance of quality of life from November 1st through January 15th has become a source of fuming rage inside of me.  After six very LONG days opening the new bistro in San Francisco I returned back to Portland running on fumes. My one day...
