I’ve never been a fan of those DVD players in cars. I made MANY five hour trips in a car as a child with nothing but books and a Walkman. We talked, sang and played games. Or we just sat in silence…alone with our thoughts and imagination. 

Now that I am a Mom and have endured a few three hour rides with a 2 year old, I see the argument for those players. However, we do have a rule. A movie is not to be used on a car ride two hours or less. It is also not allowed to come out before at least two hours into a car ride.

Children need to learn to self entertain. To talk with their parents. To play games. To just enjoy listening to music. They need to learn how to play the alphabet game in the car!

So today when I was taking city streets home at 5p.m. - I became really sad noticing the number of mini vans that had their DVD players playing. 

Don’t parents talk with their children? Even when Audrey was only months old, I used to talk with her on our ride home and when I had nothing to talk about - I sang with the oldies on the radio. When she had a bad day and was pissed to be in the car seat - I sang the songs in my head to tune out her screaming. 

I just don’t understand…

I so strongly agree. We have a friend here that has a 4 year old daughter who she SWEARS just cannot be in the car without “her shows”. Ironically the little girl’s uncle is a friend of our as well, and he has the same philosophy as you…no movies in trips under 2 hours etc… And when the uncle has her in the car they play I Spy, and sing songs, and do all of the things we ALL used to do and the kid survives just fine. GO FIGURE.
